We Can’t Control Change

Let’s talk about something a little bit different, maybe something you haven’t thought of, but something that you and I are confronted with and have to deal with almost every single day, every single hour of our lives. And that is change.

So many people are concerned about change. We look at what’s happening all around us and there’s concern about changes that could come. Well, let me just give you a little hint: the only thing that is not going to change in your life, the only thing that will not change this year is that things will continue to always change.

Things are going to change around you. If you don’t believe it, next time you hold a picture of your wedding or your graduation, hold it up to your face and look in the mirror, and you will see that things are changing every day! If you look down and you are a guy in his 40s or 50s and you can’t see your shoes, you know that some things have changed. Things are going to continue to change in your life. What’s going to change?

I don’t know what’s going to happen this year to you, but I can tell you this—the weather is going to change, you’re going to have snow, you’re going to have sun, you’re going to have rain, it’s going to be warm, and it’s going to be hot. Everything else around you is going to change, too. Life is going to change, so the issue is, what are you going to do with it? Are you going to be a product of that change and are you going to embrace that change and make that change work for you? Or are you going to be one of those people I see on a daily basis that continues to resist the changes that are happening to them and around them and that affect them?

Change is a good thing if you make it that. It creates opportunity. The things that are going to change in your life are not important. What’s important is what you do about it. You can’t control all of the things that happen around you. Beautiful young babies are going to be born, loved ones are going to pass on. You are going to have surprises—some will be pleasant, and others not so pleasant. You are going to have challenges, but you are also going to have opportunities. That’s called life.

We cannot control change, but what you and I can control is our thoughts. We can change our attitudes, we can change our habits, and we can change our actions. So this year, when you are confronted with changes and challenges, focus on that. Don’t focus on what’s happening outside that you can’t control. Focus on the things that you can control. Let’s change our attitudes, change our habits, change our actions, and we will see the positive results that will come in our businesses and in our personal lives.
